Overview

Portable fire extinguishers are a critical first line of defense against small, incipient-stage fires. When properly selected, placed, and maintained, they help occupants respond quickly while emergency services are en route. Sophos Fire Systems provides comprehensive inspection, testing, maintenance, and replacement services for all common extinguisher types, including ABC dry chemical, CO₂, Class K, and specialized hazard units.

Inspection, Testing & Maintenance

Monthly/Quarterly Inspections

• Visual inspection of each extinguisher for damage, corrosion, leaks, or missing parts
• Verify extinguisher is in its designated location, properly mounted, and clearly visible
• Check pressure gauge/indicator is in the operable range (where applicable)
• Confirm safety pin and tamper seal are intact
• Inspect hose/nozzle condition and ensure discharge path is unobstructed
• Verify labeling, operating instructions, and signage are legible
• Review service tags and confirm inspection intervals are current

Annual Testing & Maintenance

• Perform annual maintenance per extinguisher type and manufacturer requirements
• Internal/external condition check as applicable (including verification of weight for CO₂ units)
• Replace tamper seals and update service tags/labels
• Recharge service as needed (low pressure, partial discharge, or required maintenance)
• Evaluate units for required internal maintenance intervals and hydrostatic testing due dates
• Replace worn components (o-rings, hoses, nozzles, valves) as needed

Common Deficiencies

• Missing extinguisher, wrong type for the hazard, or improper placement
• Obstructed access, blocked signage, or unit not visible/accessible
• Low pressure, damaged gauge, missing pin, or broken tamper seal
• Corrosion, dents, cracked hoses/nozzles, or leaking/discharged units
• Outdated service tags, missing labels, or overdue maintenance/hydrostatic testing
• Improper mounting height or missing/loose brackets
